Description:

Welcome to the amazing world of Chemistry!  Chemistry is all around us, from the air that we breathe to the water that we drink.  This course will explore the study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes.  Students will focus on several foundational concepts such as the periodic table, atomic structure, chemical formulas, balanced equations, molar relationships, and the kinetic theory.  Students will be performing laboratory exercises that correlate with the material being focused on for that particular section.  Students will be quizzed and tested over material on a weekly basis.  During the latter part of the course specific emphasis will be focused on course review for the Virginia Standards of Learning final examination.  So hold on and lets all become scientific investigators as we embark to study the composition of matter and how manipulation of that matter affects life on Earth.

Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL’s) 2010 covered by this course:

  • CH.1 - The student will investigate and understand that experiments in which variables are measured, analyzed, and evaluated produce observations and verifiable data.
  • CH.2 - The student will investigate and understand that the placement of elements on the periodic table is a function of their atomic structure.
  • CH.3 - The student will investigate and understand how conservation of energy and matter is expressed in chemical formulas and balanced equations.
  • CH.4 - The student will investigate and understand that chemical quantities are based on molar relationships.
  • CH.5 - The student will investigate and understand that the phases of matter are explained by kinetic theory and forces of attraction between particles.
  • CH.6 - The student will investigate and understand how basic chemical properties relate to organic chemistry and biochemistry.

  • Respect the property of others and of the school!  Keep your feet off of the furniture.  Do not sit on the laboratory tables.  Be extremely careful with computer equipment.  No games are to be played on the computers.

  • Be responsible!  Turn all assignments in on time unless otherwise directed by Mr. Owens.  Late assignments will not be accepted unless approved by the teacher.  You are responsible for all material presented in class.  Therefore regular attendance is expected and required.  If you miss a class, you miss the learning whether your absence is excused or unexcused.
  • Cell Phones!  Students are not allowed to use their cellphones in class unless it is part of an assignment.  The cell phone policy will be strictly enforced.

  • The Laboratory is NOT a restaurant!  NO FOOD or DRINKS in class.
  • This is NOT a call center!  Please turn OFF cellular phones while in class, if phone goes off during class, it will be confiscated and given to Mr. Edwards.

  • Cheating for this class is defined as either giving or receiving unauthorized assistance during a quiz, during an examination, or in the preparation of the introduction and conclusion sections of laboratory assignments.  CHEATING IS STRICKLY PROHIBITED!!!

  • The area between Mr. Owens’ desk and the chalk board are off limits to students unless they have been granted permission to be there.

I have high behavioral expectations for my students and an extremely low tolerance for distractions from learning.  Let’s have a great semester of accomplishment, fun, and success together.

Grading Scale

The grade scale used in Dickenson County Public Schools will be used in this class

Late Assignments

  • All late work must be submitted 5 Days  after the assignment is missed.
  • Students with multiple late / missing assignments are expected to turn them in as soon as each one is completed.
  • Submitting many late assignments at end of a grading period may not allow me to get all of them graded in time.

Class Materials

You are required to bring these materials to class every day:

  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Composition Notebook (preferably Graph Ruled)
  • Ruler (with millimeters and inches)

These supplies are optional, but many students find them very helpful:

  • Colored pencils/pens/markers
  • Calculator
  • Protractor

Participation

I expect you to PARTICIPATE in this class and take an active role in the classroom.

  • Ask questions if you are not sure or feel stuck.
  • Complete all of your assignments on time.
  • Pull your weight in group work.

Attendance

I expect you to attend every class. We move very quickly and do a lot of group work in this class. Absences will leave you with a lot of catching up to do and a group that feels you let them down.

The only acceptable absences are excused through the attendance office. It is your responsibility to notify me after an excused absence from the attendance office and to retrieve your missed work.

Make-up work

If you have an excused absence, it is expected that you will make up all missed work. Make-up work must be completed within five (5) days of your return to school.

Any make-up work is due at least one week before the end of the grading period.

Extensions

If you need more time in order to turn in an assignment at a level where you are happy with it, let me know before it is due. Be prepared to share what you have already completed in order to get an extension.

Integrity

I expect you to do your own work.

Show me that I can trust you by being honest.

If you copy someone else’s work or allow someone to copy your work, you will receive a zero for the assignment and your parents will be notified.
