Course Description

English 11 will study the development of American literature.  Students will learn the history of American literature and track the development of the literature through modern writing.  While studying the evolution of American literature, students should further develop their reading skills while expanding their literary vocabulary to better enhance reading comprehension.

 

This class will be a writing intensive class.  Students will expand their writing capabilities beyond a basic five paragraph essay and all essays are required to have a developed and specific thesis statement.  Students are responsible for integrating an expanded vocabulary into their writing while developing writing that expresses their ideas.  All writing will be subject to prewriting, editing, and final draft review.

SOLs

  1. The student will make planned informative and persuasive multimodal, interactive presentations collaboratively and individually. 

  2. The student will examine how values and points of view are included or excluded and how media influences beliefs and behaviors. 

  3. The student will apply knowledge of word origins, derivations, and figurative language to extend vocabulary development in authentic texts.

  4. The student will read, comprehend, and analyze relationships among American literature, history, and culture.

  5. The student will read, interpret, analyze, and evaluate a variety of nonfiction texts including employment documents and technical writing.

  6. The student will write in a variety of forms, to include persuasive/argumentative, reflective, interpretive, and analytic with an emphasis on persuasion/argumentation. 

  7. The student will self- and peer-edit writing for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, paragraphing, and Standard English.

  8. The student will analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and organize information from a variety of credible resources to produce a research product. 


Needs for the Class

Students are not required to purchase any materials for this class. Students will work on Chromebooks and paper and pencil will be provided as needed.

Exam Exemption Policy

An exam will be given on the next to last day or last day of classes depending upon which blocks are decided upon by the administration. The exam exemption policy is as follows:

Average—Absences

A—3

B—2

C—1

D—0

F—no exemptions

 

Make-Up Work Policy

Students must complete assignments when assigned. When absent, the student will have five days to turn in an assignment; assignments will not be accepted after the fifth day. A student will not get to make up an assignment (s)he is present for and simply does not complete it.

 

Extra Credit

Extra credit is offered throughout the semester at my discretion. It will be offered to the class as a whole. Extra credit will not be given at the end of the nine weeks/semester because a student wants a higher grade.

 

Alternate Assignments

Some materials of important literary value that will be read/viewed may reference or include language or sensitive subject matter, but these selections will be chosen carefully because of their value. Some video versions will have a PG 13 rating. If parents DO NOT wish for their child to read a particular novel or view a class video, they must submit a request in writing that their child be given an alternate assignment to complete while the class is studying the novel or viewing the movie.
